The New York auto show marks the North American debuts of BMW's CS concept and M3 convertible — but the bigger news is surely the announcement of a BMW as the World Green Car Of The Year.

The eco-friendly distinction was bestowed upon Europe's 118d hatchback and gives the automaker's EfficientDynamics program a massive endorsement.

A jury of 47 auto journalists from 24 countries selected the Bimmer from 10 contenders. Rounding out the top three, all diesels, are the diminutive Smart car and a Volkswagen Passat TDI.

The diesel four-cylinder 118d achieves nearly 63 miles per gallon with very low emissions. EfficientDynamics technologies at work include brake-energy regeneration, automatic start-stop and electric power steering.

The CS concept first appeared almost a year ago at the Shanghai auto show. The large stylish sedan is likely
headed for production and would top BMW's model range, even above the 7 Series. For full information and photos, please see

BMW's high-performance M3 is now available as a fun-in-the-sun convertible, joining already-released sedan and coupe versions. It's equipped with a high-revving 414-horsepower V8, sport-tuned chassis and folding hard-top roof. For full information and photos, please see
