The eco-friendly distinction was bestowed upon Europe's 118d hatchback and gives the automaker's EfficientDynamics program a massive endorsement. A jury of 47 auto journalists from 24 countries selected the Bimmer from 10 contenders. Rounding out the top three, all diesels, are the diminutive Smart car and a Volkswagen Passat TDI. The diesel four-cylinder 118d achieves nearly 63 miles per gallon with very low emissions.
