BMW Shatters Sales Records In '07
The new Mini saw sales gains in 2007.

The BMW Group shattered worldwide sales records in 2007 for all three of its automotive brands.

Overall the Group was up 9.2 percent with 1,500,678 vehicles sold — of these, 1,276,793 were BMWs (up 7.7 percent), 222,875 were Minis (up 18.5 percent) and 1,010 were Rolls-Royces (up 25.5 percent).

The leader was the 3 Series (sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible) with 37 percent of sales, followed by the 5 Series (15.4 percent) and then the 1 Series (11 percent).

With its brand-new second generation, the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle saw sales jump 60.1 percent, from 75,321 in '06 to 120,617 in '07.

However, some models that have been around for a while experienced declines — including the 7 Series (down 11.6 percent), 6 Series (down 10.6 percent), Z4 (down 8.4 percent) and X3 (down 1.9 percent).

The BMW Group anticipates breaking records again in 2008 — especially with new launches such as the 1 Series coupe and convertible, and X6 crossover.

United States: Once Again BMW's Largest Market
The United States continued to be BMW's largest single market in 2007, selling a record 293,795 cars and light trucks, up 7.1 percent. Home country Germany was the second biggest market with 284,523 sales.

The sales winners — which included the 3 Series (up 18.6 percent) and new X5 (up 31.4 percent) — more than made up for the losers, which included every other BMW model, the biggest being the Z4 (down 17.8 percent), 7 Series (down 17 percent) and X3 (down 10.3 percent).

With production all ramped up for the new Cooper and Cooper S, Mini USA posted record 2007 sales of 42,045, up 7.3 percent. The Cooper attracted 21.2-percent more buyers than '06 while the Cooper S attracted 12.7-percent more. The convertible Mini, which is still based on the previous generation, appealed to 20.5-percent less customers.

Canada: A Whopping 20-Percent Increase!
If last year Autobahn Report referred to BMW's Canadian sales increase of 8.7 percent as being healthy — then 2007's increase of 20 percent can be described as nothing short of whopping!

BMW achieved a new record high with 24,301 vehicles sold, thanks to big increases by the 3 Series convertible (up 201.7 percent) and coupe (up 125.9 percent), as well as the new X5 (up 88.8 percent).

Mini has been posting sales gains in Canada every year since it came to the country six years ago — it didn't disappoint in 2007 with an increase of 8.6 percent, to 3,703 vehicles.
