Mini Plans SUV
Dec. 15, 2007
Mini is not one to rest on its laurels.
Its latest model, the Clubman, hasn't yet hit the market but the automaker is already gearing up for another new model, a sport-utility vehicle.
Like SUVs of its BMW parent company, the Mini is being referred to as a Sports Activity Vehicle (a BMW trademark).
The four-wheel-drive vehicle is being developed by Mini designers and BMW engineers, alongside BMW's X1, but will be built by Magna Steyr, a BMW partner in Austria that has previously built the successful X3 SAV.
By outsourcing production, Mini is able to focus its main Oxford, England factory — 260,000 units annually — on the regular Mini, Mini convertible and Mini Clubman.
While the Mini SAV has been internally called Colorado, actual market names under consideration are rumored to be Crossman and Monte.
