BMW To Expand USA Production
BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina factory builds the Z4 and X5 — and soon others.

Eyeing strong growth in the United States, BMW plans to significantly expand production capacity at its only factory in the country.

"We will expand the production capacity of our US plant in Spartanburg in the medium term from the current 140,000 to well over 200,000 vehicles per annum," stated Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, at the annual general meeting today in Munich.

"This is one element of our future strategy," he added. "Taking this step will help to lower our US-dollar currency risk."

It's estimated the BMW Group lost over $800-million in the last financial year alone due to the weak US dollar and Japanese yen.

BMW builds the Z4 sports car and X5 Sports Activity Vehicle in Spartanburg. The X6 crossover and a successor to the X3 are also scheduled for production there.

The United States is BMW's largest single market, selling 313,603 cars in 2006.
