While similar to Infiniti's FX,
BMW's X6 has a more
dramatically sloping roof.

With its radical X6, BMW is inventing a new segment.

Sort of.

Well, okay, not really — Infiniti's similar FX has been around for a number of years.

Both are crossovers, boasting characteristics of a sedan (four doors), SUV (high ground clearance, big wheels and tires) and coupe (low-slung roof, bold style). BMW calls the X6 "the world's first Sports Activity Coupe."

Unlike the Infiniti, BMW's X6 has a more dramatically sloping roof for a more sporting fastback style.

The X6's rising belt line along with convex and concave surfaces work together to give the impression of speed and agility. A short front overhang and longer rear overhang contribute to the dynamic wedge shape.

An oversized double-kidney grille adorns the front along with large air scoops with foglights, while aluminum underbody protection, front and rear, and big 21-inch fender-filling wheels hint at the all-wheel-drive prowess.

The side profile is both sporty and elegant — with dark tinted windows that appear as a single piece, framed by a chrome strip that becomes larger towards the rear, accentuating BMW's signature Hofmeister kink.

A row of lights in the top of the rearview mirrors operates as daytime running lights along with four corona rings in the headlamps.

Compared to the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle on which it's based, the X6 is longer, wider and lower.

The X6 boasts a large double-kidney grille, big air scoops and lower aluminum plate.

The X6 marks BMW's first application of Dynamic Performance Control, a drivetrain and chassis control system that works to correct over- and understeer by spreading out drive forces to the rear wheels. Working in concert with xDrive all-wheel drive, torque is split not only between the front and rear wheels but also from side to side for improved agility and added stability.

While engine details have yet to be divulged, expect no less than BMW's 300-horsepower twin-turbo inline-six and a V8 in top-line trim. (AutoWeek forecasts a new twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 packing 410 horses.) Diesels and hybrids are also likely.

BMW calls the X6 revealed today at the Frankfurt auto show a concept, much like it called the M3 at the Geneva show earlier this year a concept. Like the M3, not much is expected to change when the X6 goes on sale in North America next year. Autobahn Report predicts larger rearview mirrors, more like the X5.
